Nigerian Government Confirms Bird Flu Outbreak in Kano State.
The Federal Government has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (bird flu) in Kano State, affecting various bird species such as layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Dr. Taiwo Olasoju on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, concerns were raised about the increased likelihood of the dis£ase spreading during this period.
The government has called for enhanced vigilance and the adoption of strict biosecurity measures to contain the outbreak.
“We need to take adequate preventive measures,” the circular stressed, urging state veterinary offices and stakeholders to collaborate in preventing the spread of the virus to neighboring states.
Authorities also highlighted the importance of raising public awareness and closely monitoring poultry to quickly detect and manage new cases.
Shedding light on the initial incident, the Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Kano State, Dr. Usman Gwarzo, provided a detailed account of the first reported case.
“In December 2024, a young man from Galadanchi quarters in Gwale Local Government Area purchased a duck from Janguza market in Tofa LGA and added it to his existing flock of hens and chickens.
The duck d+ed suddenly, followed by the chickens. The carcasses were taken to Gwale Veterinary Clinic, where avian influenza was suspected,” Dr. Gwarzo explained.
The government’s response includes intensified surveillance and the promotion of preventive measures to mitigate the impact of the outbreak on poultry farmers and the wider economy.
