More woes for Edo cultists as Governor Okpebholo signs 21-Year Jail Term for offenders into law.



Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has signed the Secret cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Bill, 2025, into law, repealing the Edo State Secret cult Prohibition Law, 2018.

The new law, passed by the Edo State House of Assembly, takes effect from January 24, 2025. According to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the law introduces tougher penalties for cult-related offenses.

Individuals convicted of murder in c¥lt-related activities face the death penalty, while financial or material sponsors of cultism will receive 21 years in prison.

The law also prescribes 10 years in prison and property demolition for those who harbor c¥ltists or allow their property to be used for c¥lt-related activities.

Cultists involved in assault, injury, or destruction of property will face 21 years behind bars.
