EFCC Confirms Arrest of Bobrisky: Faces Charges for Currency Mutilation and Naira Abuse, Heading to Court
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has indeed confirmed the arrest of popular crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky. Reports circulating online earlier suggested his arrest at Pinnock Estate in Lagos State on April 3, 2024, at 3 pm.
A spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, provided exclusive details to Linda Ikeji Blog, disclosing the reason behind Bobrisky’s arrest. According to Oyewale, Bobrisky was apprehended for currency mutilation and abuse of the Naira. He further revealed that the internet sensation is currently in their facility in Lagos and will be charged to court in due course.
“He is with us. We arrested him over currency mutilation and abuse of Naira. He is in our facility in Lagos State,” Oyewale said.
This development follows remarks from a police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who recently explained the complexities surrounding the arrest of individuals like Bobrisky, James Brown, and others. Adejobi highlighted the legal intricacies, emphasizing that while cross-dressing itself isn’t a punishable offense in Nigeria, being queer is.
He clarified that without concrete evidence linking cross-dressers to the LGBTQ community, legal action becomes challenging. Adejobi stressed the importance of substantial evidence for court proceedings to proceed effectively.
In March 2024, Bobrisky responded vehemently to critics of his cross-dressing lifestyle. Via a lengthy Instagram post, he defended his choices, asserting the importance of individual freedom and personal decisions. He affirmed his readiness to face any scrutiny, even from a higher power, and urged detractors to respect his autonomy.
