Ogun Police Blame Rising Cases of Missing Girls on “Hookup” Culture.
The Ogun State Police Command has linked the increasing cases of missing girls & ritual killings involving females to the growing trend of “hookups.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Omolola Odutola, the PRO of the command, highlighted the dangers associated with the hookup culture—a slang term for casual, transactional sexual encounters.
“Today, we have numerous reports of missing persons. By the time we start an investigation, not less than 10 young girls and ladies go missing daily,” Odutola said.
She explained that investigations often reveal connections between these disappearances and hookup channels or apps, where victims are lured to unfamiliar locations and sometimes fall prey to ritualists.
“These cases are not accidental. Most are tied to h+okup arrangements where young women are invited by strangers to unknown places, ultimately leading to their harm or use in ritual killings,” she added.
Odutola further noted that Ogun State has seen a troubling rise in such cases, referencing recent incidents.
In October, the police reported the disappearance of 18-year-old Testimony John, who went missing after running an errand to Saabo Market in Sagamu.
Similarly, in September, the brutal murder of 17-year-old Habibat Akinsanya, a secondary school student, prompted a statewide manhunt for her killers. The PPRO urged young women to exercise caution and avoid risky interactions, emphasizing the need for vigilance to combat this alarming trend.
