Pres. Trump jokes about running for a third term in a speech, sparks mixed reactions.
President Donald Trump raised eyebrows Monday by joking about running for a third term during remarks at a House Republicans’ retreat at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami.
While his comments were met with laughter, they continue to fuel speculation about his ambitions. “I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure,” Trump said.
“I think I’m not allowed to run again.” He went on to ask Speaker Mike Johnson, who was on stage with him, “Am I allowed to run again? Mike, I better not get you involved in that.” Johnson, a former constitutional lawyer, chuckled along with other Republicans in the audience.
The remarks came days after Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., introduced a proposal to amend the Constitution and lift the two-term limit on U.S. presidents.
“President Trump has proven himself to be the only figure capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness,” Ogles said.
